Description
In Your Team Comes Last, entrepreneur and attorney Travis Lee Howard challenges conventional startup leadership advice by arguing that most businesses are built in the wrong order. Founders rush to hire teams, chase growth, and scale operations before understanding themselves, their values, and the deeper motivations driving their decisions.
Drawing from decades of real-world experience across law, consulting, technology, cannabis, staffing, and high-growth entrepreneurial ventures, Howard shares raw lessons from businesses that generated millions in revenue yet still collapsed under pressure. Through stories involving founder burnout, cofounder conflict, investor disputes, emotional reactivity, and leadership failure, he reveals the hidden human dynamics that often determine whether a company survives.
At the center of the book is a simple framework: Self. Customer. Machine. Team.
Howard argues that conscious leadership begins with self-awareness. When founders understand their gifts, emotional patterns, and ideal customer relationships first, they can create healthier business culture, stronger alignment, and more resilient organizations.
Blending entrepreneurial memoir with leadership psychology and operational insight, Your Team Comes Last offers a practical alternative to hustle culture and reactive management. It is written for founders, executives, and entrepreneurs seeking sustainable small business growth without sacrificing their health, relationships, or sense of identity.
