Description
‘A poetic vision of life at the margins…Belan is a bold and impressive new talent.’ Mark Brandi, bestselling author of Wimmera and The Rip
Some people follow the line they were given. Others rewrite it.
Eleven-year-old Eddie moves through the world braced for impact – counting breaths, reading rooms, learning survival before he has words for any of it. His rules are simple. Stay small. Stay silent. Stay alive.
When his mother drags him to a crumbling coastal town and a housing block ruled by addiction and violence, the line between boyhood and something harder begins to blur. Somewhere behind him, people are asking questions. Ahead, doors are opening that he doesn’t want to think about. So Eddie does the only thing he can. He writes it all down: the chaos, the brutality, the quiet moments no one else notices.
And as he writes, something shifts. Memory, dream, and truth begin to fold together. A story surfaces that reaches beyond him – beyond his mother, beyond the block – back through a long line of inherited trauma.
Around him, figures gather like constellations: a rooftop musician chasing peace, a teacher who refuses to let go, a philosopher living out of a van. And always, circling – a crow. Watching. Waiting. Remembering.
An extraordinary novel about what is carried, what is chosen, and what can yet be broken and remade.
