Description
• Explores Freyja’s many faces—goddess, warrior, sorceress, and queen of the dead—through primary sources including the Eddas and Norse literary tradition
• Reveals how Freyja’s attributes of fertility, wealth, and beauty carry profound metaphysical meaning, offering a framework for inner transformation and self-knowledge
• Integrates mythological scholarship with Seiðr magic, runic wisdom, and the philosophy of the Wyrd (the mastery of Fate), to illuminate the enduring relevance of Nordic spirituality
Freyja stands as one of the most complex figures in world mythology. She is not merely a deity of love and beauty, but is closely associated with the Valkyries, mistress of Seiðr magic, and sovereign of the full cycle of existence. Juliette Nicolas reclaims this formidable goddess from centuries of misreading, restoring her to her rightful place at the center of Northern spiritual tradition.
Drawing on the Poetic Edda, the Prose Edda of Snorri Sturluson, and the scholarship of Georges Dumézil, the author traces Freyja’s origins among the Vanir through her mythic roles: teacher of Seiðr to Odin, patroness of childbirth and ancestral magic, and embodiment of the sacred dyad of Eros and Thanatos.
An analysis of the Freyja–Frigg–Skadi triad illuminates the full arc of the divine feminine in the Northern tradition, while chapters on the Norns, the Wyrd, and the gendered nature of ancient magic ground the book in rigorous historical and literary scholarship.
Balancing mythological analysis with practical reflection, Freyja offers a living framework for self-knowledge, personal transformation, and spiritual practice. This book is an invitation to encounter the ancient goddess whose wisdom speaks directly to the modern search for meaning and connection.
